The Pioneers were picked fifth in the Preseason Coaches' Poll
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – In its first season in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), the Sacred Heart University women's basketball team was picked fifth in the 2024 MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced at the league's Media Day on Tuesday.
The Pioneers embark on a new era in their storied history coming off of two straight Northeast Conference (NEC) championships and back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
SHU posted one of the most dominant seasons in NEC history in 2023-24, losing just one conference game all year en route to a 15-1 regular season record and three double-digit wins in the conference tournament.
A big reason for the Pios' success was the dominance of Ny'Ceara Pryor, who was named Preseason All-MAAC First Team today. The two-time NEC Player of the Year and NEC Tournament MVP averaged career highs in scoring (18.7 ppg), rebounding (7.1 rpg), assists (4.5 apg) and shooting (.464 fg%). She led the NEC in scoring, assists, steals and field-goal percentage and finished the regular season eighth in the country in total steals (95) and 10th in steals per game (3.2 spg).
The MAAC announced three preseason all-conference teams, including a preseason player of the year. To view the full list – click here.
Leading the way in the Preseason Coaches' Poll is defending MAAC Champion Fairfield, being a unanimous favorite. Siena earned second place, while Niagara and Quinnipiac were slotted in a tie for third.
The Pioneers begin the 2024-25 season on Monday, Nov. 4, with a road bout at Hofstra at 7 p.m. in Hempstead, N.Y.
