SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. — Six goal-scorers tickled the twine on Friday night as the Sacred Heart University women's hockey team took an emphatic 6-0 win over Saint Michael's College in New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) action. The win propels the Pioneers to eight wins on the campaign and into position for its third NEWHA sweep of the season.Â
Â
SHU's league-leading dominance showed in the first period in Friday's affair with the Pios acting as the aggressor for a majority of the frame. With under five minutes to play, SHU's top line of
Isabella Chaput,
Ella Holm, and
Ally Cohen had a slight chance in front, but could not shovel it home Minutes later, a wraparound attempt in front found forward
Kate Helgeson whose eventual wrist shot took a deflection and careened wide, keeping the scoreline level as the Pios grabbed an 11-2 shots on goal advantage into the first intermission.Â
Â
In the second period, the Pios held firm on the attack, eventually finding the game-opening goal five minutes into the frame. Having spent the first minutes of the period on the power play, SHU worked a tired lineup of Purple Knights in their own zone as
Ella Holm collected her own rebound and slotted the puck into an empty net to put SHU ahead 1-0.Â
Â
Two minutes later, having taken the puck away at center ice,
Addie Bowlby collected her second point of the season – and first collegiate assist – setting up
Campbell Heger along the far wing with a pass that Heger rifled past SMC's Annika Lavender to double the SHU lead.Â
Â
Following the score, the Purple Knights had their best opportunity to cut into the SHU lead, sending a chance down low that almost beat SHU netminder
Jillian Petruno on a wraparound. However, the junior eventually found the loose puck and smothered it for a whistle. Following the one-off chance, the Pios found the third goal of the evening as a lovely handoff between
Sami Bowlby and
Kate Helgeson led to the latter having a wide-open chance along the wing that was deposited with four minutes to play in the second period. SHU continued pestering the hosts for the remaining minutes of the frame to take a 3-0 after 40 minutes. Â
Â
The offense continued in the final frame as the Pios continued pestering SMC in their own zone, resulting in the fourth goal of the contest. Having hemmed the Purple Knights in their own zone, the forechecking pressure from
Peyton Bennetts led to a pass being deflected off of her stick and through an unsuspecting Lavender to give SHU the 4-0 advantage with five minutes gone in the final stanza.Â
Â
SHU piled on the goals in the final minutes of regulation as S. Bowlby finished off an
Addie Bowlby dish from behind the net, sending a one-timer past the far side of Lavender to put SHU ahead 5-0. With minutes left in the game, SHU put the sixth and final dagger on a decisive victory with
Bria Holm wiring a wrist shot off the crossbar and into the net to put the finishing touches on a 6-0 win.Â
Â
In goal, Petruno continued her shutout streak, tallying 12 saves on the night before being pulled for
Lauren Larson with moments left in the third period. Larson tallied her first collegiate save in the final three minutes of the game as the Pios extended their combined shutout-streak to three games.Â
Â

- The 6-0 scoreline is the most goals the Pios have scored in a game this season and the most since scoring six goals against the Saint Anselm on January 12, 2024 (6-2 win).
