FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Addie Bowlby connected for her first collegiate goal while
Jillian Petruno grabbed her third-consecutive shutout as the Sacred Heart University women's hockey team completed a weekend sweep of Assumption, dismantled the Greyhounds via a 4-0 scoreline on Friday night. The win propels the Pioneers to a 7-3 record and back in the driver's seat of the New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) standings heading into mid-November.
With both sides having been flawless through the first period the night before, the Pios grabbed a hold of home-ice advantage early in Saturday's affair, earning the game's first power play three minutes in. On the job, the Pios worked along the wings, sending a few chances in front of ASM's Jadyn Weiser that the sophomore dealt with ease, keeping the scoreline level, 0-0.
With time winding down on the advantage, the Pios grabbed the game-opening goal as
Ally Cohen sent home her second of the season just over five minutes into the opening period. With
Olivia LaRoche and
Savannah Popick playing pitch-and-catch along the left wing, the latter went streaking toward the net, sending a pass in front to Cohen who sent a spinning backhand shot past Weiser to open the scoring.
SHU continued berating the opposition after the opening goal, finding a few chances that were sent aside by Weiser to keep it a one-goal game past the halfway mark of the period. Having spent a majority of the period on the back foot, ASM found itself with a one-off chance before picking the puck out of their own net 10 seconds later following a turnover in the low slot.
Having dispossessed a Greyhound in her own zone,
Addie Bowlby nabbed her first collegiate goal, finishing off a give-and-go from
Kate Helgeson, following up a nifty deke with a sinister backhand labeled for the top corner to put the hosts ahead, 2-0, with seven minutes to go in the frame. The Pios continued to pressure ASM through the remainder of the period grabbing a 7-2 shot advantage through the first 20 minutes.
The Pios continued the onslaught in the second period having sent a few chances on their way to Weiser that were negated. Though SHU held the momentum offensively, the penalty kill provided the lone fireworks in the period on two opportunities in the frame.
Just over halfway through the period,
Campbell Heger committed the first of two SHU infractions in the final 10 minutes of the frame, sitting for a hooking minor. With the Pios having held ASM to one shot on goal until that point, netminder
Jillian Petruno and Co. held their own as the Greyhounds fired five shots toward the SHU frame but came up empty.
Three minutes later, the Pios once again fell victim to the penalty bug with
Paige McNeil being sent to the box for a tripping call. Though ASM had the personnel advantage, the Pios grabbed the lone special teams goal of the period as an interception from
Kailey Smith led to a slow-developing two-on-one for the Pios. Having received an entry feed from Smith,
Isabella Chaput wired a wrist shot that snuck through Weiser and slowly across the line to put SHU ahead, 3-0, with five minutes left in the frame.
Petruno and Co. continued the defensive clinic for the remainder of the frame, killing off the McNeil minor while holding the Greyhounds to six shots in the period with only one coming at full strength. On the other end, the Pios grabbed an 18-8 lead in shots on goal to take the 3-0 lead into the intermission.
Dominating the pace of play through two periods, SHU continued working in the offensive zone to begin the third. With two minutes and change having been elapsed to begin the period, the Pios found a 4-0 lead with
Bria Holm netting her first goal in the Red & White. Following a broken play in the high slot, the sophomore forward knifed her way through the offensive zone, wiring a wrist shot short-side, high, to continue the onslaught.
SHU continued dominating well into the period, keeping Assumption to just one shot on goal during the early part of the frame before sending five shots on goal in the waning stages for a total of 14 through the contest. The Red & White clamped down defensively to secure the third-consecutive shutout for Petruno, finishing off the Greyhounds 4-0 for a weekend sweep.
