Men's Basketball Travels to Wagner on Saturday

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University men's basketball team will play its third straight road game on Saturday, February 17, at Wagner at 4:00 pm. The Pioneers and Seahawks wrap up their season series on ESPN+.

LAST TIME OUT:
  • Sacred Heart fell on the road, 75-58 to LIU on Saturday evening. 
  • Kyle McGee led the Pioneers with 16 points while Nico Galette and Alex Sobel both added 11 each to round out double-figure scoring. 
  • Sobel was the team leader in rebounds with nine, Joey Reilly had a team-high three assists and Brendan McGuire was the team leader in blocks with two. 
  • After a 33-33 tie at halftime, LIU shot 57.69% from the field in the second half, outscoring SHU 42-25 to take the home win. SHU and LIU have split the season series, each with a win on their own home court. 
 
OPENING TIP:
  • Sacred Heart and Wagner wrap up the season series on Saturday. The Pioneers won the first game of the series, 66-61, on January 21 at home. Saturday will be the 49th meeting between the two teams. 
  • SHU will play its third of three straight road games. The Pioneers fell to CCSU & LIU last week.
  • Sacred Heart is 6-5 in Northeast Conference play and sits in a tie for third place in the standings. The Pioneers have swept Le Moyne and split the season series with Saint Francis and LIU. SHU is perfect at home in NEC play, the only losses in conference action have come on the road. 
  • Three active Pioneers are averaging in double figures: Nico Galette (14.0), Joey Reilly (11.8), and Alex Sobel (11.6). Sobel leads the team in rebounds (7.3), and Galette is second with 6.8 rpg. Sobel is four rebounds away from 1,000 in his career.
  • Sobel is sixth in the nation in blocks with 66 (as of 2/15) and is sixth in blocks per game with 2.64.
  • SHU has four active 1,000-point scorers which is tied for the third most in the NCAA.  
  • Reilly, Galette, and Tanner Thomas have brought in NEC Player of the Week awards for the Pioneers this season. Sobel has been a Prime Performer three times. 
  • Galette, Reilly, and Kyle McGee were voted captains for 2023-24.
  • SHU was selected first in the Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Galette and Reilly were selected to the All-NEC preseason team.
