Men's Basketball Travels to Stonehill in Last Week of Regular Season

SHU takes on Stonehill on Thursday evening

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – With two games left in the regular season, the Sacred Heart University men's basketball team sits in a tie for third place. The Pioneers will travel to Stonehill on Thursday, February 29, at 7 pm and return home to face Merrimack on Saturday, March 2, at 2:00 pm.

LAST TIME OUT:
  • Alex Sobel and Raheem Solomon scored in double figures, leading the Sacred Heart University men's basketball in a 68-67 home loss to Central Connecticut in NEC action on Saturday afternoon. 
  • The setback was the first home loss for the Pioneers since December 9 and first home loss in conference play.
  • Sobel had 17 points as he shot 8-for-14 from the floor and tallied six blocks. 
  • Solomon scored in double figures for the second straight game with 16 points as he went 5-for-9 from the field and 2-for-5 from three-point range. 
  • SHU had a 13-point advantage early in the second half, but Central was able to take advantage of a few runs and tie the game just with under 10 minutes left. 
  • CCSU went ahead by nine, but with 49 seconds left in the game, Joey Reilly made a layup to tie the game at 62-62. A pair of fouls allowed Central to jump ahead by four, but despite a last-second three-pointer from Nico Galette, CCSU was still ahead by one to take the 68-67 final. 
 
OPENING TIP:
  • Sacred Heart and Stonehill wrap up the season series on Thursday. SHU won the first game 77-72 at home on February 1. This marks the 38th match of all-time between SHU and Stonehill dating back to 1966-67, when both teams were DII. The Pioneers hold the series advantage 23-13. 
  • SHU is 8-6 in Northeast Conference play and sits in a tie for third place in conference standings. 
  • The Pioneers are coming off of a 1-1 week at home, taking down FDU on Thursday, 99-91 but falling to CCSU 68-67on on Saturday. 
  • Three active Pioneers are averaging in double figures: Nico Galette (13.5), Reilly (11.9), and Sobel (11.7). Galette leads the team in rebounds (7.1), and Sobel is second with 7.0 rpg. 
  • Sobel is fifth in the nation in blocks with 80 (as of 2/28) and is sixth in blocks per game with 2.9.
  • The Pios have two games left in the regular season, at Stonehill on Thursday and back home against Merrimack on Saturday. 
  • SHU has four active 1,000-point scorers which is tied for the third most in the NCAA.  
  • Reilly, Galette, and Tanner Thomas have brought in NEC Player of the Week awards for the Pioneers this season. Sobel has been a Prime Performer three times. 
  • Galette, Reilly, and Kyle McGee were voted captains for 2023-24.
