Softball Defeats Fairfield in Final Road Game of Regular Season

SHU took both games this year against its future conference rival

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University softball team pulled off a thrilling 6-5 comeback victory over nearby Fairfield in nonconference action on Wednesday afternoon at the Stags' Alumni Softball Field.

Of Note:
The Stags got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead. 

SHU evened the score at 1-1 with a pair of hits in the top of the third. Jenna Mowad began the scoring inning with a one-out single before Victoria LoPinto smacked a double to center to put two on. In the next at-bat, Cierra Bender smacked a fly ball to center, allowing Mowad to score from third. 

Fairfield scored the next two runs to take a 3-1 advantage into the top of the sixth. 

The Pioneers swung the game in their favor in the sixth, hanging five runs on the scoreboard to take a 6-3 advantage. Bender led off the inning with a single before a Carly Koltko put runners on the corners. With one out, back-to-back fielding errors by the Stags brought in the next two runs to tie the game at 3-3. A wild pitch plated SHU's fourth run, while Mowad sent a two-out single through the right side of the infield to plate the final two runs. 

A three-run lead proved to be just enough for Sacred Heart, as a two-run Fairfield seventh gave the Pioneers a 6-5 road victory. 

In the circle, Sam Kowalski started and threw 4.0 innings with two earned runs and two strikeouts. Emily Heath picked up the win with 3.0 innings of relief, striking out three Stags and giving up one earned run. 

Up Next:
The Pioneers will conclude the 2024 regular season on Sunday, May 5, with a home nonconference bout against St. Johns at 1 p.m.
