SHU’s Ice Technician Gets Regional Award
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - George Arnaoutis, Sacred Heart's Hockey Facility and Plant Systems Manager, was inducted into the Frank J. Zamboni Hall of Fame by the Northeast Ice Skating Manager's Association on April 30 as part of its annual conference.
Arnaoutis, in his third year at SHU, earned NEISMA's most significant award for his outstanding work on ice surfaces all over the country over the last 45 years, which included 40 years at Yale's Ingalls Rink.
"We are delighted that NEISMA recognized George for all his accomplishments in this industry," said Marc Izzo, the Vice President of Construction & Facilities Management at Sacred Heart. "The honor is well deserved. He's a great man, an asset at the highest level and we are honored to have him at our institution."
Arnaoutis, a former competitive figure skater, installed and maintained surfaces for numerous events at Manhattan's Rockefeller Center, including three election nights. He has been part of ice setups for U.S. Figure Skating sectional and national championships, men's and women's NCAA tournaments and Frozen Fours, AHL venues and all-star games and nationally televised skating shows.
SHU's top ice technician, deemed "the smooth operator" by a New Haven media outlet while working at Ingalls, has installed ice at NHL buildings in Boston, New York, Long Island, New Jersey, Columbus and Nashville.
"It's an honor to be recognized by our organization, which includes so many talented professionals," said Arnaoutis, who has also taught classes in ice installation, painting and maintenance for the Ice Sport Industry and for the North American Rink Conference & Expo. "I am excited to continue to learn from those people and help our Martire Family Arena become the best place to play the game."
