Strong Second Period Propels Buckeyes to Win over Men's Ice Hockey

Pioneers finish weekend with a split against nationally-ranked Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A three-goal second period proved to be too much for the Sacred Heart University men's ice hockey team, as the No. 14/15 Ohio State Buckeyes earned a weekend split against the Pioneers with a 3-0 win on Saturday evening at the Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

Records:
SHU: 3-2-0
Ohio State: 4-2-0

How It Happened:
The Buckeyes started game two with momentum, going on a five-minute power play 2:50 into the contest after Liam Lesakowski was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct for elbowing following a review. SHU was ready for the challenge, burning off the five minutes. Ajeet Gundarah made four saves in the stretch as he continues to excel between the pipes.

SHU tallied the next strong chance, as Joshua Barnes came inches away from scoring a power play goal at 9:35. Stephane Huard started the chance by sending a great pass across the zone that found Barnes, who waited a second before firing a shot from in front of the left faceoff circle. Unfortunately for SHU, a diving Kristoffer Eberly got the back of his leg on it to keep the game scoreless heading to the second.

The Buckeyes took control in the second period, building a 3-0 lead. The first goal came on Ohio State's third power play, as Davis Burnside sniped a slapshot from the high slot at 8:17. The second goal came after a close-onside call, so SHU challenged, but it would ultimately be upheld. The last score came at 18:19, as the home team took a 3-0 lead into the third.

Neither team generated many chances in the third period, as shots stood at 10-8 in favor of Sacred Heart. Despite the added pressure, Eberly held on to secure the win in net.

On the other side of the ice, Gundarah tallied 26 saves. Even after the defeat, Gundarah owns a .951 save percentage and a 1.25 goals-against average on the season, ranking in the top 10 in Division I.

Notes:
  • Jack Hillier made his collegiate debut against the Buckeyes.
  • The Pios suffered their first road loss of the season, dropping to 3-1-0 away from Fairfield.
  • Tonight's game marked the first time this season SHU was held scoreless.
