Clean Sweep: Pios Dominate the Competition in Tri-Meet With Merrimack and Stonehill

Sacred Heart posts commanding victories behind a deep lineup of event winners

BROCKTON, MASS – The Sacred Heart University women's swimming and diving team continued its strong start to the season with an impressive sweep on the road, defeating Merrimack, 209–90, and Stonehill, 198–95, in Sunday's tri-meet at Massasoit Community College. 

The Pioneers opened the day with a victory in the 400 medley relay, as Maddie Goret, Maggie Holland, Sophie Tonello, and Sophia Velleco combined for a winning time of 3:58.65, setting the tone for a dominant team performance.

Velleco led the way for the Pios as a triple winner, capturing the 100 butterfly (58.20) and 200 butterfly (2:09.27) titles, while also anchoring the winning medley relay. Maddie Goret was a double winner, taking first in the 400 individual medley (4:39.64) and contributing to the medley relay victory.

Maggie Holland added another strong swim for the Pioneers, winning the 200 breaststroke (2:28.63).

Other standout performances included Kristen Baker's win in the 100 backstroke (59.03) and Brooke Labarge's first-place finish in the 200 freestyle (2:00.12).

The diving squad once again delivered for SHU, with Ryleigh Mahoney winning the five-dive event (183.60) and Kara Leahy taking the 1-meter title (253.28) to round out a complete team effort.

With the sweep, the Pioneers continue to build momentum heading deeper into their fall schedule. Sacred Heart returns to action on Friday, November 8, when they visit Rider University when they continue MAAC play.
