Men's Basketballs Hosts Marist on Friday

SHU opens final weekend in the Pitt Center with Red Foxes

FAIRFIELD, Conn.—The Sacred Heart University men's basketball team returns to the Pitt Center for its final two home games of the season. The Pioneers will host Marist on Friday, February 28, at 7:00 pm in the teams' first and only meeting of the year.

Opening Tip:

  • Sacred Heart and Marist meet for the first and only time this season. The game also marks the first meeting between the two teams since 1980. During the teams' DII days, they played 13 times, and SHU held a 12-1 advantage in the series, dating back to 1967. 
  • The Pioneers are coming off a 1-1 split on the road last weekend, defeating Merrimack 60-59 and falling to Saint Peter's 85-79. 
  • Griffin Barrouk matched his career-high 19 points, leading four Pioneers in double figures at Saint Peter's. Amiri Stewart tallied his first career double-double (16 p, 11 r). Tanner Thomas (18) and Anquan Hill (17) also scored double figures. Mekhi Conner had 11 assists. 
  • Three Pioneers are averaging double figures: Thomas (15.0), Hill (12.8), and Stewart (12.3). 
  • Thomas is the team leader in rebounds with 6.3, followed by Bryce Johnson (5.7) and Hill (5.3).
  • Conner is 13th in the nation with 176 assists this season and is 10th in assists per game with 6.5. 
  • Sacred Heart's 9.6 three-pointers per game is 38th in the country 
  • Thomas was named to the All-MAAC preseason third team. 
  • This is Sacred Heart's first season as a full-time member of the MAAC.
  • The Pioneers have 10 new players on the team. 
  • Head Coach Anthony Latina is in his 12th season as head coach and 20th year overall with the Pioneers.   

Last Time Out:

  • Sacred Heart fell 85-79 to Saint Peter's on the road on Sunday.
  • Barrouk tied his career-high 19 points while making a career-high six three-pointers.
  • Stewart tallied his first career double-double with 16 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
  • Thomas (18) and Hill (16) also scored in double figures, and Conner dished out 11 assists.
  • Sacred Heart trailed by nine at the half but opened the second half with a 14-1 run to take a four-point edge.
  • The Pioneers led by as many as five, but a Saint Peter's run ultimately put the game away as the home team took the 85-79 final.

About Marist: 

  • Marist is 20-5 overall and 13-3 in the MAAC, currently tied for first. 
  • The Red Foxes have won four in a row, most recently coming off a pair of home wins over Canisius (89-91) and Niagara (64-61).
  • Josh Pascarelli (16.6) leads three players in double figures: Elijah Lewis (12.0) and Jackson Price (10.1). Jaden Daughtry leads the team in rebounds (6.4). 
  • Marist defense is second in the league (64.4).
