West Point Weekend Up Next for Pios

SHU Playing Two Big Games at Army

2/5/2025 9:48:00 AM

SHU Game Notes

The first place Sacred Heart Men's Hockey Team, coming off a five-point AHA road weekend against Niagara, is on the road again this weekend with a pair at Army. The Pioneers skate at Tate Rink on Friday at 7 and Saturday at 4 in contests with significant implications on the standings airing live on FloSports.

LAST WEEKEND
The Pios erased deficits in both games in upstate New York to register 3-2 wins against the team that ended their last two seasons in the conference playoffs. Five different players scored goals, including two from junior defenseman Mikey Adamson (AHA Defenseman of the Week), and a dozen skaters contributed points. Adamson had the OT winner on a power play in game two, while graduate center Max Dorrington hit the net in the third period of game one to get the winner. First year goalie Ajeet Gundarah (AHA Goalie of the Week) stopped 69 of 73 shots, including four in OT, to notch both wins.

SHU SURGE
SHU, which went 6-2-1 in January and surged to first place with 46 points, is 8-2-1 in its last 11 while rising to No. 26 in the Pairwise and receiving 46 votes in the uscho.com national poll.

AHA PICTURE
The Pios (46 points), who have played more games than anyone and have only four remaining contests, own a five-point lead over second place Holy Cross. The most points SHU could accumulate is 58. Holy Cross (41), Bentley (40) and Niagara (39) are close behind; Army (32) is also within striking distance. All three of those teams have six games (possible 18 points) left, so it's a bit early to figure anything out, including byes and home ice in the conference playoffs.

ARMY
The Cadets were on a seven-game win streak heading into Tuesday's contest with Bentley. Army, in fifth place with an 11-9 conference record, scored the first two goals but gave up the next five in a 5-2 loss at Waltham, Mass. The offense was prolific, and the defense was excellent during the win streak, outscoring opponents 40-12.
