Men's Basketball Hosts Fairfield on Senior Day for Home Finale

SHU will celebrate its two graduating student-athletes

FAIRFIELD, Conn.— After clinching a spot in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) postseason tournament on Friday, the Sacred Heart University men's basketball team closes out its final weekend at home, welcoming cross-town rivals Fairfield on Sunday, March 2, at 2 pm in the Pitt Center. The Pioneers will honor their two graduating student-athletes before the start of the game.

Opening Tip:

  • Sacred Heart and Fairfield meet for the second time this season and 12th overall in the series history, dating back to 2007. SHU beat the Stags for the first time on February 8, 77-71. 
  • The Pioneers are coming off a huge 67-54 victory over Marist on Friday to clinch a spot in its first MAAC Postseason Tournament. 
  • Bryce Johnson scored a season-high 22 points and had seven rebounds, and Tanner Thomas added 16 points with eight boards in the home win. 
  • Three Pioneers are averaging double figures: Thomas (15.0), Anquan Hill (12.8), and Amiri Stewart (12.1). 
  • Thomas is the team leader in rebounds with 6.3, followed by Bryce Johnson (5.8) and Hill (5.3).

  • The Pioneers have 10 new players on the team. 
  • Head Coach Anthony Latina is in his 12th season as head coach and 20th year overall with the Pioneers.

Last Time Out:

  • Sacred Heart defeated Marist 67-54 at home on Friday evening, clinching a spot in the MAAC postseason tournament.
  • Johnson (22) and Thomas (16) each scored in double figures in the win.
  • After trailing 12-5 in the first half, the Pioneers went on a 20-0 run to take a 25-12 lead midway through the first half.
  • From there, SHU never trailed. Marist pulled within three in the second half, but the Pios pushed back to take the 67-54 final.

About Fairfield: 

  • Fairfield is 11-17 overall and 7-10 in the MAAC and is fighting to secure a playoff spot. 
  • The Stags have won two in a row, at Rider (69-49) and at home against Mount St. Mary's (69-62).
  • Prophet Johnson leads the team in points (12.1) and rebounds (7.3) and is the lone player averaging double figures.
  • Johnson is fourth in the MAAC in rebounds.
