
Rugby Dominates Queens (N.C.) in 91-0 Victory

SHU’s win is its biggest since 2019
EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Sacred Heart University women's rugby team looked dominant in a 91-0 win over Queens (N.C.) in NIRA action on Saturday at Mount St. Mary's (Md.) in Emmitsburg, Md.
After storming up 21-0, Gabrielle Ferreira scored the first of her four tries to make it 28-0. Reece Woods also added multiple tries with two. A conversion from Reese Torticill capped the day with a conversion to give the Pioneers their biggest win since beating Molloy 122-0 on Oct. 26, 2019.
The Pioneers didn't take long to find the scoreboard, as Marley Gurmendi scored a try 44 seconds into the game.
Avonlea Wood and Maria-Jean Paulino each scored to make it a 19-0 game 17:50 in. Ferreira then tallied her first try of the day at 20:50.
The Pios didn't look back from there as they added 11 more tries from there. On those tries, Reese Torticill hit eight conversions.
The Pios' B-side also played today, earning a 17-17 tie against the Mount. The. Mountaineers went ahead 12-0 before SHU rallied to tie the score at 12-all with tries from Sarah Lyons and Ava Steed.
The Mount scored next to go ahead 17-12, but an Ashley Torres-Brown try settled the score in a draw.

The Pios will next leave NIRA play for a 5 p.m. road match at AIC on Sunday, Sept. 14.
