Fairfield, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey program received exciting news this week, as 2017 alum, Amie Varano, was named to Italy's women's national ice hockey team for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Milan.

Varano, a former captain, will become the first Olympian in Sacred Heart women's ice hockey history. During her time at SHU, she enjoyed a standout career, highlighted by her senior season in which she recorded five goals and 15 assists, which helped lead the Pioneers to a 20-9-2 record. Over the course of her collegiate career, Varano totaled 36 points and left a mark on this program.

On a phone call with Pioneers head coach Thomas O'Malley, Varano shared the news, saying, "Coach, I am going to Milan." O'Malley, who had been eagerly awaiting the announcement, replied, "Amie, I have been waiting to hear this news for a long time. I've been checking the computer every day, waiting for this announcement." Overjoyed, he added, "Amie has worked so hard, and I am so happy for her and her family."

Varano's selection marks a historic milestone for Sacred Heart women's ice hockey, and as she continues to prepare for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Milan, Sacred Heart will be cheering her on every step of the way.
