HARTFORD, Conn. – Sacred Heart University lightweight rowing opened its fall racing season Sunday at the Head of the Riverfront Regatta, competing against a field of non-lightweight programs.
The Pioneers' 8+ boat, coxed by Ava Del Greco, finished 12th out of 27 crews in the Open Women's 8+ event, posting a time of 15:27.330.
Sacred Heart also competed in the Open Women's 2x, where the Pioneers recorded a fourth-place finish in 18:15.596. The second SHU boat placed seventh with a time of 18:37.442.
The Pioneers closed out the day with two boats in the Open Women's 4+ event. Sacred Heart finished 14th in 17:18.007, while the second boat placed 25th in 18:15.102.
"It was a solid first race of the new season while we are ramping up our training," said associate head coach Lucy McCarron. "The lightweight team showed they have a lot of grit while racing amongst non-lightweight programs, finishing 12th out of 27 in the Open Women's 8+ event and fourth in the Open Women's 2x."
McCarron said the Pioneers stayed committed to their race plan throughout the day and executed what they have been working on in training.
"The team stuck to their own plan and went out there to implement what we've been working on," said McCarron. "I'm really pleased with how everybody handled the day and it was great to have my first race with the team."
