Sacred Heart University women’s rugby battled Army West Point on Saturday afternoon, with the Pioneers falling 24-17.
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Sacred Heart University women's rugby battled Army West Point on Saturday afternoon, with the Pioneers falling 24-17.
Army opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a converted try to take an early 7-0 lead.
The Pioneers answered in the 18th minute, as Carrie Coyer-Westerberg crossed the try line to cut the deficit to 7-5.
Army responded with back-to-back tries in the 25th and 30th minutes, extending its lead to 17-5 heading into halftime.
SHU came out strong in the second half, as Olivia Woods scored in the 45th minute to bring the Pioneers within seven at 17-10.
Army added another converted try in the 61st minute to push its advantage to 24-10.
The Pioneers continued to battle, as Maria-Jean Paulino found the try line in the 65th minute, with Reese
Torticill adding the conversion to make it 24-17.
Despite a strong push late, SHU was unable to complete the comeback, falling to Army 24-17.
Coyer-Westerberg, Woods and Paulino each recorded a try for the Pioneers, while Torticill added a conversion.
"We know Army is always going to be a battle, and we struggled to connect from kickoff. I am proud of our resilience and bounce back in the second half, but it wasn't enough to take the win. We look forward to learning from this match and coming back stronger this weekend," said Head Coach Michelle Reed.
The Pioneers head to Charlotte, North Carolina to take on Queens University at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 26.
