Matt Micros enters his ninth season at the helm in 2026 with a 55-67-22 overall record and a 37-30-11 record in conference play. He is the third head coach in SHU's history.
In 2025, Micros led the Pioneers to the most successful season in program history. Sacred Heart finished with 11 victories, tying a program record, and captured its first Metro League Championship after a memorable postseason run. The Pioneers rallied for a comeback win over Siena in the quarterfinals, upset top-seeded Fairfield on the road in the semifinals, and claimed the championship in a snow-filled penalty shootout. Micros then guided the program to its second NCAA Tournament appearance, where the historic season came to an end against Georgetown. Along the way, Sacred Heart also recorded a program-best five-game winning streak.
In 2024, Micros led the Pioneers to their fifth consecutive playoff appearance in its first season in the MAAC. In five years in the NEC, the Pioneers reached the playoffs four times, reaching three semifinals with a championship game appearance in 2022. That game ended in a draw before FDU advanced to the NCAA tournament on penalty kicks. Overall, Micros has coached 9 players to all conference honors with an NEC Rookie of the Year nod for Michelle Clarkin in 2019.
The 2024 season was one that saw the Pioneers overcome five season ending injuries and an 0-8-2 start, to stun eventual conference champion and cross town rival, Fairfield 2-1, as part of a four game unbeaten streak that landed the Pios back in the playoffs. SHU was the only MAAC team and one of only three teams to beat the Stags all season.
He posted a successful season in 2022 with an 11-5-5 overall mark, including a non-conference road win over 2021 NCAA Sweet 16 program St. John’s from the Big East. Against the NEC, Micros led Sacred Heart to a third-place regular season finish with a 5-1-3 record. Victories over LIU and Merrimack landed the program in the conference championship game for only the third time in program history.
Prior to arriving at SHU, Micros spent nine seasons as the head coach at Post University. Under his tutelage, the Eagles made six playoff appearances, reached three ECAC Tournament semifinals and won the ECAC in 2015. Micros was named the CACC Coach of the Year, leading the Eagles to the program's best record, 12-6-1, and the CACC Championship Game in 2014.
In addition to his collegiate coaching, Micros is the co-founder of the Connecticut Football Club where he oversees the ECNL girls program. He has coached four top 20 nationally ranked teams, and totaled 11 Connecticut State Cup Championships.
The development of players that can excel at the next level has been paramount in the growth of CFC under Micros' leadership. In the last decade alone, 127 CFC players have signed to play at Division I schools including: Boston College, Clemson, Indiana, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Northwestern, Penn, Penn State, and West Virginia.
Micros also served as the head coach of the Connecticut Olympic Development Program from 1997-2004, leading the team to a National Finals appearance in 2003. During that time, he coached numerous elite players, including Alyssa Naeher, the long time starting goalkeeper for the US Women's National Team.
Micros graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a B.A. in American Studies. He earned an M.S. in Television, Radio & Film from Syracuse University's Newhouse School of Communications in 1990 and attended SHU's Graduate School of Education in 1995-96.
A native of Pittsford, N.Y., Micros resides in Milford, Connecticut with his wife Katy and son Grayson.
