MILFORD, CT - Senior captain Mike Funk scored a pair of goals and assisted on another to lead the University of Alabama-Huntsville to a 6-2 win over Sacred Heart University in a penalty-filled men's ice hockey game Saturday night. The two teams combined 123 minutes of penalties in the game, 75 of those belonged to the Pioneers.
After the two teams skated to a physical 3-3 tie on Friday night, the rematch turned things up a notch on Saturday. Three game misconducts were doled out, and the Pioneers spent the final 10:30 of the game shorthanded.
Funk scored the first goal of the game at 9:35 of the first period. The Pioneers tied it on the first collegiate goal by freshman Peter Giatrelis at 1:53 of the second on a five-on-three power play.
Senior Gerald Overton gave the Chargers the lead back :34 later with a shorthanded tally. That was when things started to unravel for the Pioneers. A series of penalties resulted in three more Charger goals in the second period, two of them on the power play from Funk and senior Tyler Butler.
Brad Holland scored his second goal of the season for Sacred Heart at 19:50 of the second on another five-on-three to make it 5-2 after two.
The Chargers outshot the Pioneers 21-1 in the third period and only the stellar play of senior goalie Eddy Ferhi kept things from getting completely out of hand for SHU. He finished the game with 37 saves, 20 of them in the third.
The loss dropped SHU to 4-5-5 overall, while AL-Huntsville improved to 5-7-2. This was the final game of the semester for the Pioneers and will return to action on January 3 at home against MAAC rival Bentley.
