FAIRFIELD, CT (September 18, 2002) - The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced its 2002 Academic Top 25 Honor Roll for NCAA Division I, recognizing the nation's highest team grade point averages (GPA) for the 2001-02 season based upon nominations submitted by WBCA-member coaches. The Sacred Heart women's basketball team made the top-25 for the second straight season with a team grade point average of 3.275.
The Pioneers rank 21st and are the highest ranked school among Division I teams from Connecticut. Yale, the only other Connecticut team in the top-25, was 24th with a 3.260 GPA. Last year's 3.275 grade point average was an improvement over the 2000-01 team whose 3.259 GPA ranked 15th nationally.
"This is another tribute to the student athletes we have in this program," commented head coach Ed Swanson. "Our players have shown once again that they have what it takes to be successful both on the court and in the classroom."
Much of the Pioneer success on and off the court can be traced to one of its leaders, co-captain Brooke Kelly (Medford, NJ). Kelly was the Northeast Conference 2001-02 Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year. Along with posting a 3.48 grade point average as a Pre-med major, she was also named to the All-NEC second team and All-NEC Tournament team for her efforts on the court last season. The senior forward averaged 14.2 points and 6.3 rebounds per game and enters this season ninth on the school's all-time scoring list with 973 career points.
