MILFORD, CT (January 31, 2003) - The Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team defeated Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponent Quinnipiac University, 4-1. This marks the first victory for the Pioneers against the Bobcats since March 1, 1997. Sophomore Garrett Larson (Rycroft, AB) led the Pioneers in the win with a goal and two assists.

Larson opened the scoring at 12:57 in the first period from freshmen Bernie Chmiel (Pittsburgh, PA) and Peter Giatrelis (Hamden, CT). Sacred Heart increased their lead to 2-0 on a power play tally by junior Marc-Andre Fournier (St. Nicholas, QUE) from Larson and senior Martin Paquet (Ste. Catherine, QUE).

Quinnipiac got on the board at 1:18 in the second period with a power play goal by senior Wade Winkler from senior Brian Herbert and sophomore Matt Craig. Giatrelis answered the Bobcats at 13:28, assisted by junior Mike Reagan (Flin Flon, MB) and Larson. Senior Lloyd Tennant (Billings, MT) closed out the scoring at 15:23 from senior Michael Forsland (Anchorage, AK) and sophomore Ryan Bremner (Williams Lake, BC).

Senior Eddy Ferhi (Charenton, France) made 19 saves in the win, while Bobcat goaltender Justin Eddy made 23 saves.

The Pioneers return to action tomorrow night, February 1st, as they travel to Northford, CT for the rematch against Quinnipiac at 7 pm.
