MILFORD, CT (February 25, 2003) - The Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team moved into fifth place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference by defeating Iona College, 6-3 at the Milford Ice Pavilion Tuesday night. Sophomore Garrett Larson (Rycroft, AB) led the Pioneers by notching a hat trick and adding an assist, while senior Martin Paquet (Ste. Catherine, QUE) had a goal and three assists.
Paquet's goal places him at the top of the Pioneer career goal list with 62 and his four points made him SHU's all-time leading scorer with 134 points.
Larson opened the scoring at 10:25 of the first period, assisted by freshman Rocco Molinaro (Dearborn, MI) and Paquet. Iona's Ryan Manitowich tied the score at one just over a minute later to close the scoring in the period.
Manitowich put the Gaels up at 7:06 of the second from Brent Williams and Aaron Kakepetum. Larson came back with his second of the night just 14 seconds later to even the score. Senior Lloyd Tennant (Billings, MT) put the Pioneers ahead for good at 12:49 with help from senior Michael Forsland (Anchorage, AK) and freshman Bernie Chmiel (Pittsburgh, PA). Paquet netted the next goal at 15:40, assisted by Larson and Molinaro. Chmiel tallied one of his own to close out the scoring at 17:56 from junior Marc-Andre Fournier (St. Nicholas, QUE) and freshman Peter Giatrelis (Hamden, CT).
Larson completed his hat trick on the power play at 11:39 in the third period from Paquet and Fournier to close the scoring for the Pioneers. The Gaels had one more goal at 12:45 from Mark Hallam, assisted by Jamie Carroll and Tim Krueckl.
Pioneer senior goaltender Eddy Ferhi (Charenton, France) earned the win, making 38 saves. Iona netminders Mike Fraser and Ian Vigier split the game, with Fraser recording the loss and making 22 saves and Vigier coming in to make 16 saves.
The Pioneers return to action Friday as they play host to the Black Knights of Army at 7 pm. Prior to the game, nine seniors will be recognized as they play in their final home contest.
