STATEN ISLAND, NY - Senior pitcher Michele Walker fired a three-hitter, junior first baseman Leslie Konsig drove home the winning run in the sixth inning to help the Sacred Heart University softball team to a 2-1 win over Wagner College in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday. Wagner came back to win the second game, 3-1.
Wagner jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Marie Biance singled to open the game. Sphomore Kim Bruckner hit an RBI single with two outs to put the Seahawks ahead.
Sacred Heart, 6-13, scored a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Shannon Bailey that scored pinch runner Katie Bowen. Bowen ran for Walker, who had led off the inning with a double.
The Pioneers got the winning run in the sixth. Tiffani Cross-Monzo started the rally with a two-out double. Heather Gutkes pinch ran for her, and Konsig followed with the single that scored Gutkes from second.
Walker was dominant in the first game, allowing just three hits. She struck out two and walked one.
She would not be quite as in control in game two. Walker started the second game as well and yielded eight hits and three runs in 3 1/3 innings. Lauren Lapinski came on in relief and pitched 2 2/3 perfect innings to keep the Pioneer close.
Sacred Heart's bats couldn't figure out Wagner pitcher Katie Refsnyder, managing just one run on an RBI double by Bailey in the second inning.
