
Softball Splits Twinbill in Florida

ORLANDO, FL - Senior pitcher Michele Walker (Paramus, NJ) had a pair of hits and went the distance on the mound, striking out three, to lead Sacred Heart to a 2-1 win over Holy Cross in the first of two games in Florida Tuesday morning. The Pioneers lost the second game of the day to Valparaiso, 3-2 in nine innings.
In the first contest, the Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Walker doubled with one out. Senior Katie Bowen ran for her, and two batters later scored on a single by Tiffanie Cross-Monzo.
Senior third baseman Pam Vuijst drove home what would be the winning run with a single in the fifth, scoring junior Leslie Konsig who had led off the inning with a double.
Valparaiso, 2-1, scored first in the second game and took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth. The Pioneers evened it with Vuijst drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth that scored Bowen, who entered the game as a pinch runner for Cross-Monzo who had led off the inning with a single.
The teams would take the tie into the eighth and Valpo would get the go-ahead run in the top of the inning. The Pioneers managed to send it to the ninth when Leslie Konsig scored in the bottom of the eighth on a wild pitch.
Valparaiso would win it in the ninth on a pinch-hit RBI single by Karen Constein. The Pioneers went down in order in the bottom.
