ORLANDO, FL - Senior pitcher Michele Walker pitched a five-hit shutout, while freshman shortstop Jen Place drove home the only run the Pioneers would need, as Sacred Heart blanked Gardner-Webb in the the Rebel Games in Orlando Friday afternoon.
Sacred Heart, now 2-6 on its southern swing, scored the only two runs of the game in the second inning. Walker drew a walk with one out in the inning, but was forced at second on a ground ball by Erin Caveney. With two outs Melissa McManaman singled to send Caveney to third. She scored when Place followed with a single. McManaman scored on a wild pitch by Gardner-Webb starter Stacie Reichert.
The Bulldogs had their best chance to score in the second inning when they loaded the bases with one out. Walker dug in and struck out Jordyn Hill and got Stephanie Shrum to pop out to end the threat.
Sacred Heart will conclude its trip to Florida on Saturday with return matches against Albany and Valparaiso. The Pioneers lost to both schools earlier in the week - both in extra innings.
