
LIU Softball Sweeps Pioneers on Sunday

FAIRFIELD, CT - Junior Margie Foster (Carson City, NV) had three hits, including a homer, and four RBI in the opener and Sonia Zapata (Canyon Country, CA) had three doubles and four RBI in the second game, to lead Long Island University to a Northeast Conference doubleheader sweep of Sacred Heart University Sunday, 10-2 and 14-2.
LIU, now 13-14 overall and 6-0 in the NEC, took a 3-2 lead in game one on Foster's two-run homer in the fifth inning off SHU starter Michele Walker. The Blackbirds used a seven-run sixth inning to break the game open. Senior Kathy Waddilove (Henderson, NV) had the big blow in the inning with a three-run triple.
Sophomore Jackie Brown (Westminster, CA) went all the way on the mound for LIU, giving up just one hit and one earned run to earn her sixth win of the season. The lone Pioneer hit was a two-run triple by senior Pam Vuijst (Ramsey, NJ) in the third inning.
The Blackbirds took control of game two right from the start, scoring three runs in the first, two of them on a double by Zapata. She would drive in another with a double in a seven-run fourth, and another in a four-run fifth inning.
Sacred Heart, now 8-19 overall and 3-5 in the conference, got its runs on a two-run homer by senior Eric Caveney (Spofford, NH) in the fourth inning.
Senior Crystal Eubanks (La Palma, CA) got the win on the hill for LIU, allowing just three hits while moving to 7-5 on the season. Freshman Chrissy DeMott (Levittown, NY) took the loss for the Pioneers.
