
Softball Squads Loses Twice at Yale

NEW HAVEN, CT - Leah Kelley and Katharine Shiota both hit their first career home runs as Yale beat Sacred Heart 5-3 in the first game of a college softball doubleheader. Kelley's homer was a two-run blast in the bottom of the sixth inning that gave the Bulldogs a 5-2 lead.
Shiota's blast was a solo shot in the third inning that opened the scoring. Laura Beckert added an RBI triple for Yale in the fourth. Peggy Hunt pitched six innings and allowed only one earned run to notch the victory. Beth Pavlicek got the final three outs to earn a save.
Pam Vuijst and Katie Ross each had two hits for Sacred Heart (9-22). Michele Walker took the loss on the mound to drop to 7-13.
In the second game, Jillian Miles pitched five innings, scattered eight hits and did not issue a walk as Yale won 3-1. Pavlicek went the final two innings to earn her second save of the day. Kelley had an RBI single for the Bulldogs (14-18), while Britni Fabacher added an RBI triple.
Jen Place and Michele Walker each went 2 for 3 for the Pioneers. Vuijst and Ross also both had a pair of hits for SHU. Lauren Lapinski was the tough-luck loser, yielding just four hits and one earned run.
Yale has won 12 of its last 16 games.
