PROVIDENCE, RI - Freshman Marcia Abbott fired a one-hitter in the opener, and sophomore Marissa Berkes followed with a complete game in the second to lead Brown University to 4-3 and 3-2 wins over Sacred Heart in a softball doubleheader Wednesday.
Sacred Heart, now 5-16, took a 3-0 lead in the third inning of game one. With one out, Dana Jusino and Katie Ross drew walks. Freshman Jen Place followed with a single up the middle, the lone Pioneer hit in the game, that scored Jusino. Ross scored on an Abbott wild pitch. Place scored on an infield error two batters later.
Brown, 8-11, got one back in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by senior Lauren Wong.
Sophomore Uchenna Omokaro was hit by a Michele Walker pitch to start the bottom of the sixth for the Bears. She went to third on a double by junior Melissa Brown. Laura Leonetti then singled up the middle to score both runs and tie the game.
Freshman Jamie Wirkowski beat out an infield hit to put runners on first and second with no outs. Wong then lined into a double play to Pam Vuijst at third, who threw to second to get Leonetti. It looked like the Pioneers might get out of the inning but Brown senior Erin Durlesser ripped a double that scored Wirkowski from first with what would be the winning run.
In the second game the Pioneers would again strike first. Ross reached on an infield single with one out. With two outs, Walker doubled to put SHU up 1-0.
The Bears got two off Pioneer starter Lauren Lapinski in the bottom of the inning. Wirkowski had the big blow with a two-run double.
In the third, Brown got what would prove to be the winning run on a solo homer to left center by Durlesser.
