
Pioneer Softball Splits Twinbill with St. Francis

BROOKLYN, NY - Senior Michele Walker fired a five-hit shutout in the opening game of a Northeast Conference doubleheader to help Sacred Heart win 4-0 and salvage a split with St. Francis (NY) on Wednesday afternoon. St. Francis, 10-31-1 overall and 5-12-1 in the NEC, won the second game 7-4.
Sophomore Tiffanie Cross-Monzo got Walker the only run she would need in the opener with an RBI single in the second that scored Erin Caveney who had doubled with two outs.
The Pioneers would score again in the third on a single by Leslie Konsig. They would another in the fourth on a single by Heather Gutkes, and Walker would help herself with an RBI double in the fifth.
In the nightcap, the Pioneers struck first in the second inning when Leslie Konsig scored on an RBI single by Cross-Monzo. The Terriers rebounded with two runs on the board in the bottom of the inning. St. Francis tacked on another run in the third on an RBI single by Lisa Gentile.
Sacred Heart, 11-28 overall and 6-10 in the conference, bounced back by scoring single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth to take a 4-2 lead. The Terriers exploded in the bottom of the sixth, ripping six consecutive hits off Pioneer pitcher Lauren Lapinski, two doubles and four singles, that scored four runs and sealed the game.
