FAIRFIELD, CT - Freshman shortstop Jen Place (Latham, NY) hit her first career homer in the opener, while freshman pitcher Chrissy DeMott (Levittown, NY) pitched six strong innings of relief in game two to give the Sacred Heart University softball team a doubleheader sweep of visiting Central Connecticut State University, 7-1 and 7-4 on Sunday.
Central Connecticut, 10-28 overall and 6-12 in the NEC, scored first in the opener on a second-inning RBI ground out by Allison Brander (Stamford, CT). That hit scored Karolyn Andrews who led off the inning with a double.
Sacred Heart, 14-29 overall and 8-10 in the conference, came right back with a run in the bottom of the inning. Senior Erin Caveney (Spofford, NH) led off the inning with a double and sophomore Tiffanie Cross-Monzo followed with a bunt single to put runners on the corners. Freshman Heather Gutkes (Newport, RI) drove home Caveney with a ground out to second.
The Pioneers took a 2-1 lead in the third on an RBI double by junior Leslie Konsig (Millburn, NJ). They added two more in the fourth on a double by Gutkes and a single by Pam Vuijst (Ramsey, NJ) single to center. Vuijst drove in another with a sac fly in the sixth, and Place put the topper on the Pioneer offense by clubbing a two-run homer over the left field fence.
Senior Michele Walker went the distance on the mound for SHU, allowing just four hits and striking out four to earn her ninth win of the season. Danielle Cyr (Beacon Falls, CT) took the loss for the Blue Devils.
The Blue Devils scored twice in the first inning of game two off Sacred Heart starter Lauren Lapinski (Clifton Park, NY). One of the runs scored on an infield error by the Pioneers, while the other scored on an RBI single by senior Jess Harvey (Mystic, CT).
Sacred Heart jumped on CCSU starter Jess Cline for four in the bottom of the first, three of them scoring on a double by Cross-Monzo. The Pioneers scored two more in the second on a double by Konsig.
DeMott came on to pitch for SHU to start the second and blanked the Blue Devils for the next four innings. CCSU would get two in the top of the sixth on an RBI double by Shaena Mainville (Baltic, CT) and an RBI triple by Kristin Kropp (Franklin, CT).
Vuijst drove home an insurance run for the Pioneers in the bottom of the sixth with a triple to right center.
