Pioneer Women's Basketball Adds Two More to Recruiting Class

FAIRFIELD, CT (May 19, 2003) - Sacred Heart University women's basketball head coach Ed Swanson announced today that two student athletes have signed National Letters-of-Intent during the spring signing period. Forwards Colleen Bray (Green Oak, IL/Libertyville) and Jasmine Walker (Amityville, NY/Copiague) have signed letters and will join the Pioneers in the fall.
"Heading into the spring recruiting period, we felt we needed to add a strong inside presence both offensively and defensively," stated head coach Ed Swanson. "Both Colleen and Jasmine add a defensive presence and the ability to rebound that will help take us to the next level."
Bray, a 6'1 forward out of Libertyville High School in Green Oak, IL, was a North Suburban League All-Conference selection after averaging 12.8 points and 6.3 rebounds last season. She also earned Chicago Daily Herald All-Area Team and News Sun All-County Team honors in 2002-03 while captaining her team to a 15-13 record. Bray was named to the All-Tournament teams at the Buffalo Grove Thanksgiving tournament and the Dundee-Crown Christmas tournament along with earning the Libertyville Team MVP award at the end of the season.
"Colleen will give us versatility and depth in the front court next season," commented assistant coach Mary Randall. "She brings a great overall sense and knowledge of the game to our program."
Walker, a 6'1 forward from Copiague High School in Amityville, NY, helped lead her school to its first ever state championship, capturing the New York State Class "A" title this past season. She averaged 12.8 points, 10.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 2.6 steals and 1.7 blocks in 2002-03 in pacing the Eagles to a 25-2 record and earning All-Long Island honors. Walker amassed 1,045 points and 1,076 rebounds in her four-year varsity career.
"Jasmine's strength and natural athleticism will help challenge the players currently in our program and elevate our inside presence at both ends of the court," stated Randall.
The duo round out this year's recruiting class at six incoming freshman. Bray and Walker will join guards Amanda Pape (Stamford, CT/Trinity Catholic), Mary Rush (Waterbury, CT/Holy Cross) and Kerri Burke (Saugus, MA/Bishop Fenwick) and forward Aleisha Mott (Ansonia, CT/Ansonia), who all signed letters during the early signing period.
"In my 13 years at Sacred Heart, this is the most talented and deep recruiting class we have had," stated Swanson. "Having said that, they need to come out and prove themselves. We're confident they can continue to do what they did in high school and perform at this level."
