FAIRFIELD, CT - Senior pitcher Michele Walker (Paramus, NJ) made the most of her final collegiate start, throwing a complete-game 5-0 shutout to help the Sacred Heart University softball team to a Northeast Conference doubleheader sweep of visiting Fairleigh Dickinson University on the final day of the season for the Pioneers. Freshman hurler Chrissy DeMott (Levittown, NY) gave SHU the sweep with a three-hitter as the Pioneers won 5-1.
Sacred Heart, which finished 17-30 overall and 11-11 in the NEC, got the only run Walker would need in the first inning on an RBI single junior Leslie Konsig (Millburn, NJ). The hit scored senior Pam Vuijst who led off the inning reaching on an error and then stealing second base.
The Pioneers would put up three runs in the fourth inning, two of them on a single by Vuijst and the other on an RBI single by freshman Jen Place (Latham, NY). They picked up one more in the fifth thanks to a pair of FDU errors.
Walker scattered eight hits by the Knights, including three by FDU sophomore Jessi Potter (Oneonta, NY). Walker struck out eight and walked two to raise her record to 10-17.
In game two, the Pioneers scored four times in the first inning. Senior Jamie Minieri (Stormville, NY) had the big hit in the inning with a two-run single. Konsig and sophomore Tiffanie Cross-Monzo (Thousand Oaks, CA) also had RBI in the inning.
Walker, who was the designated player in the second game, gave the Pioneers a 5-0 lead with a single in the second inning that scored freshman Jen Place.
FDU, 5-31 overall and 3-19 in the conference, finally got on the board in the sixth inning on an RBI double by junior Serena Larsen (Palisades Park, NJ).
It was the third straight win on the mound for DeMott, raising her record to 5-6 for the season.
