FAIRFIELD, CT (October 5, 2005) - The Sacred Heart volleyball team lost the first game to Quinnipiac University Wednesday night but stormed back to take the next three to secure a win the Northeast Conference opening match for both clubs. The Pioneers lost the first game 30-25 but won 30-27, 30-24 and 30-28 and are now 4-12 and 1-0 while the Bobcats fall to 2-12 and 0-1 in the league.
In game one, SHU found themselves with a 25-23 lead and looking to close out Quinnipiac. The Bobcats had other ideas as the rattled off eight straight point to close out the game 30-25 and take the early lead. The Pioneer stormed out of the gate in game two, building a 20-8 lead before another QU rally. The Bobcats cut the lead down to 21-15, 25-18 and 27-25 before tying the game at 27-27 to force a SHU timeout. The Pioneers rallied right back on a kill by junior Justina Bell (Holcomb, KS) and a pair of Quinnipiac attack errors to even the match at a game apiece.
The two teams battled back and forth on their way to a 20-20 tie in the all important game three. SHU gained the advantage going up 24-20 on a pair of Christine Duffy (Massapequa, NY) kills, a Katie Thomas (Wappingers Falls, NY) ace and a Charnette Porter (Framingham, MA) kill, forcing a Bobcat timeout. The Pioneers continued to push, closing out the swing game with a 6-3 run to go up two games to one.
Game four prove more of the same, with the score going back and forth to 14-14. The Pioneers again jumped out to a lead, 18-14, forcing another Quinnipiac timeout. SHU went up 25-21 and looked to be on the verge of victory at 29-25 before another Bobcat rally. QU cut the lead to 29-28 on two kills by Stephanie Logan and a kill by Amoi Alawoya. But SHU stopped the rally dead and took the match as Brenda Bailey (Costa Mesa, CA) ended off a pass from Michelle Clarke (Baltimore, MD).
Leading the way for SHU was Duffy who posted 17 kills, 14 digs with a pair of service aces and solo blocks... She hit .361 (17-4-36) in the match. Bailey chalked up 14 kills of her own while Porter tallied 14 kills and five solo blocks. Clarke passed out 53 assists and made 19 digs. Thomas added 18 digs of her own. Bell just missed a double double with nine kills and 13 digs.
For Quinnipiac, Kalyn Hundley posted 16 kills and 14 digs with five total blocks. Erika Montgomery added 15 kills and 11 digs while Logan finished with 14 kills. Setter Ashley Phillips passed out 53 assists while Alawoya made 20 digs defensively.
The Pioneers will return to the court next Wednesday, October 12th when they travel to Providence College.
