FAIRFIELD, CT - Senior center Kibwe Trim (San Juan, Trinidad) scored 29 points, while sophomore guard Luke Granato (Rocky Hill, CT) poured in 19, including a blistering six of eight from three-point range, to lead the Sacred Heart University men's basketball team to a 93-52 win over the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez in an exhibition game Monday afternoon.
A three-pointer by Diego Garcia gave Mayaguez a 3-2 lead, but the Pioneers went on a 15-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 17-5 lead. Trim had nine of the SHU points during the run. Pedro Colon scored with 14:14 to go in the first half for Mayaguez to break the SHU run, but the Pioneers ran off the next seven, that included a pair of Trim dunks, to take a 24-7 lead.
Sacred Heart led 43-27 at the intermission, outrebounding the Bulldogs 29-8 in the period.
The Pioneers started the second half with an 18-3 run that put away any hopes of a Puerto Rico comeback. Junior forward Jarred Frye (Maspeth, NY) and Granato each had a pair of threes during the SHU explosion.
Four Sacred Heart players finished the game in double figures. In addition to Trim and Granato, Frye and sophomore Brice Brooks (Silverdale, WA) finished with 16 points apiece. Sophomore guard Drew Shubik (Stoystown, PA) didn't score but led the team with 11 rebounds and also dished out seven assists. Junior Tavio Hobson (Seattle, WA) led the Pioneers with eight assists.
Freshman seven-footer Liam Potter (Linconshire, UK) finished with seven points and five rebounds in 20 minutes of play.
The game was a solid effort for a Pioneer team that struggled through a four-win season a year ago. The effort made all the more impressive considering the Pioneers were without their normal power forward, junior Joey Henley (Kent, WA), who is recovering from a leg injury suffered during football season.
Sacred Heart will open the season on Saturday at the University of Rhode Island at 4:00 p.m.
