WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ - Marques Alston and Dejan Delic scored 15 points apiece and Monmouth University used an 18-0 run in the second half to help the Hawks come away with a 73-64 over visiting Sacred Heart University in a Northeast Conference men's basketball game Sunday afternoon.
Sacred Heart, now 4-6 overall and 1-1 in the NEC, took an early 12-6 lead thanks to senior Kibwe Trim and junior forward Jarrid Frye, but the Hawks used a 9-0 run keyed by freshman guard Mike Shipman to take a 15-12 lead.
A three-point play by Trim with 7:29 to go in the half gave the Pioneers a 23-19 lead. With both Trim and Frye on the bench in foul trouble, Monmouth outscored SHU 13-4 in the final seven minutes of the half to take a 32-27 lead into the locker room.
The Pioneers came roaring out of the locker room and used an 11-0 run at the start of the second half to take a 38-32 lead. Frye scored the first six points of the half for SHU. Monmouth, 3-7 overall and 1-0 in the conference, got their first points of the period with 14:38 to go on a layup by Shipman. That turned out to be the start of an 18-0 Hawk run that lasted four minutes and put Monmouth up 50-38.
A three by Drew Shubik for the Pioneers with 1:25 to play got SHU back within five at 67-62 but Brent Wilson buried two free throws after a foul that knocked Trim out of the game on the next Monmouth possession.
Frye led the way for the Pioneers with his second double-double of the season with 23 points and ten rebounds. Trim finished the game with 18 points and eight boards.
