EMMITSBURG, MD (April 30) - Sophomore Caitlin Carroll and freshman Brittany Uno both hit crucial home runs as the Pioneers (14-20, 7-7 NEC) swept Mount St. Mary's (11-26, 8-10 NEC) in an NEC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Sacred Heart came away from game one with a 1-0 victory, and took down the Mount again in the nightcap by the score of 3-2.
The lone run of the first game came in the top of the second inning when Carroll took an 0-2 pitch over the left field wall for a solo shot to give SHU hurler Bethany Lemenager all the support she would need. Lemenager tossed a complete game one-hitter, striking out six Mountaneers while issuing only one free pass. She retired the first 10 batters she faced before allowing the Mount their only hit.
The Pioneers jumped on top early in the back end of the series, thanks to a two-run jack by Uno. With Jen Place on, Uno took a 1-0 pitch out to left center to give SHU pitcher Danielle Mellin a lead before she took the mound. A Dana Jusino RBI single in the fourth inning would tack on to the SHU lead to make it 3-0.
Mellin cruised through the first six innings, allowing just seven base runners while striking out three before running into a jam in the bottom of the seventh. She plunked the first batter of the inning before quickly getting the next two outs. The Mount then put together a two-out rally thanks to a walk and back-to back run scoring singles. Mellin was lifted for Chrissy DeMott who got the final out to preserve the 3-2 victory and pick up the save.
The Pioneers return to action on Sunday, May 1st, when they host Central Connecticut State on "Senior Day" at Pioneer Park. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
