ORONO, Maine -- Freshman Katy LePage scored two second half goals to lead the University of Maine field hockey team to a 5-2 win over Sacred Heart in the season-opener for both teams. The Pioneers got goals from junior Becky Ford (Salem, NH) and freshman Carisa Eye (Nesconset, NY).
Sacred Heart opened the scoring 13:25 into the game when Ford beat Maine keeper Rebecca Giroux on a scramble in front of the cage. Rookie Eye assisted on the goal for her first career point.
Maine tied the game with under four minutes to play in the first half. Off a penalty corner, Kasey Spencer and Shaunessy Saucier connected to find Joanna Fernandes who blasted a high shot past SHU goalie Ashley Del Greco (Merrimack, NH). The two teams went to the half tied 1-1.
Gina Legge put Maine up for good when she scored on a long shot from outside the goal cage at 40:28. Meagan Connolly added to the lead just under four minutes later when she tallied at 44:19.
The two teams then scored three goals over a five minute span late in the game. LePage scored her first career goal at 64:38 when she received a pass from Saucier just in front of the cage. LePage was able to beat Del Greco to give Maine the 4-1 lead. The Pioneers answered back when Eye scored her the frist goal of her career off a penalty corner from junior Colleen Carney (Yorktown Heights, NY).
Maine regained the three-goal lead in the final minute. Once again, Saucier found LePage all alone in front and she was able to beat Del Greco.
Maine goalie Rebecca Giroux, making her first collegiate start, made four saves in goal. DelGreco made 13 saves in the game for Sacred Heart.
Maine outshot Sacred Heart 23-8 in the game. The Black Bears were awarded 10 penalty corners as opposed to Sacred Heart who earned five.
SHU will be right back in action tomorrow afternoon when they face the University of New Hampshire at 1:00 pm.
