Final Stats
The Sacred Heart women's volleyball team picked-up their first win of 2005, defeating Quinnipiac University in five games at the Lafayette Invitational Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers took the first two games 30-18 and 30-23 but were forced to a fifth and deciding game when Quinnipiac posted wins of 30-27 and 30-23 in games three and four. SHU stole the match with a 15-12 win in game five.
Senior Heather Brooks (Regina, SK) who posted big numbers on day one of the tournament turned in another top-notch effort. Brooks finished with a team-best 16 kills to go with six total blocks. She hit .270 in the match (16-6-37). Fellow senior Brenda Bailey (Costa Mesa, CA) registerd 14 kills to go with 11 digs to complete the double double and also added four total blocks and three service aces.
Junior Justina Bell (Holcomb, KS) turned in her best performance to date in a SHU uniform, scoring 13 kills with 14 digs and a game high six service aces. Freshman Katie Thomas (Wappingers Falls, NY) led all players with 25 digs while senior setter Michelle Clarke (Baltimore, MD) added 16 and also passed our 21 assists. Sophomore Samantha McMillan (Manassas, VA) added 38 assists and 10 digs.
For the Bobcats, now 0-6, Katlyn Hundley had 19 kills and 24 digs. Danielle Erickson added 24 digs of her own.
Against Fairleigh Dickinson in the final match of the tournament, the Pioneers came up just short, falling in four games. The Knights took the first two matches, 30-22 and 30-18, but SHU struck back in the third, 30-22. The Knights denied the Pioneers in game four however, posting a 30-27 win for the victory. SHU fell to 1-4 on the year with the split on the day.
Bailey and Brooks once again stood tall for Sacred Heart. Bailey notched her second-straight double double effort, recording 16 kills and 15 digs. Brooks posted 12 kills and came away with four total blocks. McMillan impressed defensively, comingup with 24 digs while passing out 32 assists.
The Knights got 21 kills from Elena Schmidt on the road to victory. Kayla McLeod followed that with 13 kills.
Sacred Heart returns to the court on Friday and Saturday, September 16th and 17th when they take part in the Providence College Tournament.
