Sacred Heart Volleyball Loses to Hartford in Five Game Thriller

FAIRFIELD, CT (September 28, 2005) - The Sacred Heart volleyball team lost for the second time in three games against the University of Hartford this season, falling in five games to the Hawks in Fairfield, Connecticut Wednesday night. The Hawks improved to 7-8 on the year while SHU falls to 3-10.

In game one, SHU found themselves down 27-20 but battled their way back to even with a 7-0 run. The Hawks outlasted the Pioneers and took the first game 32-30. Sacred Heart struck back in game two, jumping out to an early 16-7 lead en route to a 30-17 victory. Game three featured another SHU run when down 24-13 the Pioneers battled back to get to within 26-24 but came up short, 30-24.

The Pioneer refused to quite, fighting their way to a 30-28 win in game four to force the fifth deciding game. SHU built on an early 8-7 lead to take a 15-7 advantage and held on late to earn the win. SHU took the advantage in game five, switching sides with an 8-6 lead. But Hartford rallied with six straight points to go up 12-8. The Pioneers had one more run left, tying the game at 13-13 but a service error and a block by Teri Connolly on match point to post the 15-13 win.

Leading the way for SHU was sophomore Christine Duffy (Massapequa, NY) who posted 17 kills and 13 digs for a double double. She hit .273 (17-5-44) in the match. Senior Brenda Bailey (Costa Mesa, CA) chalked up 17 kills of her own while fellow senior Heather Brooks (Regina, SK) added 11 kills and four total blocks. Senior Michelle Clarke (Baltimore, MD) passed out 53 assists and made 11 digs. Freshman libero Katie Thomas (Wappingers Falls, NY) recorded a game-high 17 digs in the loss.

Sophomore Jennifer Monroy and senior Mary Frances Feldman each posted 13 kills and 17 digs for the Hawks. Monroy also added a pair of solo blocks. Senior setter Brianne Paulson passed out 44 assists, dug out 11 balls and served up six aces in the win. Connolly added 14 kills to her big game winning block while senior Gillian Ryan made 10 kills.

The Pioneers will return to action this Saturday when they travel to Harvard University to face the Crimson and the Dartmouth Big Green.
