
Sacred Heart opens 2005 with 3-0 loss to Holy Cross

FAIRFIELD, CT (September 7, 2004) - The Sacred Heart women's volleyball team lost their season-opener Wednesday night, falling to the College of Holy Cross in three-straight games. The Crusaders posted wins of 30-25, 30-27 and 30-27 to earn their first win of 2005 and move to 1-3 on the year. SHU falls to 0-1.
The Crusaders were led by sophomore Christine Strawson who turned in a double double performance with 13 kills and 11 digs. Holy Cross had four players' record double figures in digs with freshman Molly Anderson leading the way with 17 while also picking up eight kills, three assists, two service aces and two total blocks. Sophomore libero Katie Fitzpatrick added 11 and senior captain Caitlin O'Callaghan chipped in with 10 more. Junior setter Chrissy Fanning passed out 28 assists in the win.
For SHU, sophomore Samantha McMillan (Manassas, VA) turned in a triple double performance despite the loss with 10 kills, 18 assists and 12 digs. McMillan also had three total blocks and a service ace. A pair of Pioneer newcomers recorded 15 digs apiece in freshman Katie Thomas (Wappingers Falls, NY) and junior Justina Bell (Holcomb, KS). Seniors Heather Brooks (Regina, SK) and Brenda Bailey (Costa Mesa, CA) each had eight kills. Senior setter Michelle Clarke (Baltimore, MD) added 11 assists.
The Pioneers will play at the Lafayette Tournament this weekend. SHU will face Hartford and host Lafayette on Friday and take on Quinnipiac and Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday.
