Milford, CT - Senior Jessica Felt (Killingworth, CT) and freshman Gina Arnone (Bridgewater, NJ) each scored a pair of goals as Sacred Heart easily beat Rhode Island for the second straight day, 6-0, in women's ice hockey action Sunday afternoon at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
The Pioneers came out buzzing early on, and Felt got the scoring started right away, 1:53 into the game. After defenseman Devon Gaslin's (Augusta, ME) initial shot was stopped by Rams goaltender Kelly Jourdain, Felt came flying in and poked home the rebound.
Freshman Allie Gillman (Montreal, QC) put the Pioneers up 2-0 with 6:48 gone by in the opening period. After Jourdain made a stop on sophomore Sarah Hickman (Amherst, MA), Gillman was in front to clean up the rebound and tally the goal.
Sacred Heart closed out a four goal first period with two scores in a 40 second span halfway through the period. Felt recorded her second goal of the game on a pretty cross ice reversal move. After switching to her backhand, Felt flipped the puck into the top of the net for the goal. Then Arnone got on the board converting a pretty centering pass from junior Michelle Panella (Marlboro, NJ) for a goal.
After a scoreless second period, the Pioneers again came out attacking in the final stanza. Arnone tallied her second goal of the game 32 seconds into the final stanza. Defenseman Kristina Feltz (Edison, NJ) blasted a shot from the blue line and Arnone was in front of the net for the deflection goal.
Senior Sarah Turbert (Norwalk, CT) finished the Pioneer scoring for the day with tally 28 seconds after Arnone's. Turbert picked up a loose rebound off a shot by Felt and tossed it into the net for the Pioneers sixth goal of the day, and final tally in the game.
Sacred Heart out shot Rhode Island 32-23 for the game. Sophomore Sarah Perry (Sudbury, MA) made her first start of the year in goal for the Pioneers and stopped every shot she faced.
The Pioneers are back in action Tuesday night when they host St. Anselm. Game time at the Milford Ice Pavilion is set for 7:00 pm.
