New Britain, Conn. (October 20, 2006) - The Central Connecticut volleyball team posted a 3-0 (30-18, 30-17, 37-35) Northeast Conference win over Sacred Heart Friday night in Northeast Conference action. Senior Brynn Good, junior Katie Karkow and sophomore Amanda Olmstead led the Blue Devils with 10 kills each, while Good added a match-high 39 assists and hit .467.
Freshman Jamie Baumert added a nine-kill, zero-error performance, hitting for a match-best .600 attack percentage.
Central (13-7, 2-1 NEC) controlled play during the first two games, winning 30-18 and 30-17 while trailing only once (1-0 in the second game).
After falling behind on the first serve of the second game, Central responded with a 10-2 run and never let the Pioneers get within six points for the remainder of the game. The Pioneers started strong in the third game, racing out to a five-point lead (12-7). The visitors held their lead for much of the game and were one point away from extending the match. Central, however, scored three straight points to force extra points. The two teams traded the lead until the 35-35 point. CCSU collected the winning points on junior Melissa Meagher serves.
Overall, Central outhit the Pioneers .265 to.057 for the match. SHU got eight kills from senior Justina Bell (Holcomb, KS) who also came up with eight digs. Freshman Katelyn Morin had six kills and hit .294 (6-1-17).
The Pioneers (1-19, 0-3 NEC) return to action next weekend hosting Fairleigh Dickinson and Wagner.
