Final Stats
FAIRFIELD, CT (October 28, 2006) - The Sacred Heart volleyball team fell to Fairleigh Dickinson Saturday afternoon in Northeast Conference action in three-games. The Knights posted wins of 30-26, 30-28 and 30-25 to pick-up the win and improve to 15-10 overall and 3-2 in the NEC. The Pioneers fell to 1-20 win the loss and remained winless in the league at 0-4.
SHU led in the early going of game one, holding a 13-10 lead before the Knights tied it at 16-16 and then took a 20-17 advantage. Leading 27-21, the Pioneers were able to cut it to 27-25 but fell short with a pair of attack errors and a two kills by Elena Schmidt to close it out.
Game two was back and forth the entire way, with neither team opening more then a three point lead. FDU led 25-22 and looked to be on the way to a win before SHU closed in, tied it and took the lead on a Tiffany Phoenix (Cresskill, NJ) ace, 26-25. FDU answered with back-to-back kills by sisters Megan Philbrick and Ali Philbrick to lead 27-25. SHU tied it again at 27-27 and then once more at 28-28 on Sam McMillan (Manassas, VA) kills but the Knights ran off the final two points on a Sacred Heart service error and a Schmidt kill.
The Knights came out on fire in the third game, running out to a 15-3 lead and a 20-7 lead. The Pioneers came up with a spirited comeback, cutting the lead down to 27-25, but it was too little, too late as FDU came up with a kill from Schmidt and a pair of SHU attack errors to end the game and the match.
Fairleigh Dickinson got a match-best 10 kills from Lauren Boothby who also posted a .500 hitting percentage (10-2-16). Boothby also added four digs and two solo blocks to her totals. Schmidt just missed double digit kills finishing with nine.
The Pioneers got eight kills from Phoenix who also added eight digs and five service aces. Sophomore Katie Thomas (Wappingers Falls, NY) made nine digs in the loss. Freshman setter Morgan Gross (Dumfries, VA) passed out 28 assists and had seven digs.
SHU will return to NEC action tomorrow afternoon hosting Wagner at 4:00 pm.
