
SHU Volleyball Loses in Five to Wagner in NEC Action

FAIRFIELD, CT (October 29, 2006) - The Wagner College Seahawks battled back from down two games to one to beat Sacred Heart in five games Sunday afternoon in Northeast Conference volleyball action. The Seahawks won the first game, 30-19 but SHU rebounded with wins of 31-29 and 30-26 in games two and three. Wagner closed out the match with a 30-27 win and a 15-13 win in game five to improve to 7-19 and 2-3 in the NEC. SHU falls to 1-21 and 0-5 with the loss.
After dropping game one, SHU bolted out of the gates to a 13-2 lead in game two. The Seahawks battled their way right back into the game and pulled the game even at 21-21 and then went up 28-24 and looked to be on the way to the win. SHU, however, responded and ran off a 7-1 run to close out the game. Game three and fourth where back and forth with the Pioneers grabbing early control of game five. SHU ran out to a 7-2 lead but it was Wagner who closed strong, going on a 9-1 run to take the advantage 11-8 on the road to victory.
The Seahawks got 20 kills from Brandy Barnett who had 81 attack attempts in the game. Kerry Krohn turned in a double double with 15 kills and 21 digs. She also posted five service aces, two solo blocks and a block assist. Sirena LaBurn finished with 11 digs in the win.
Sacred Heart was led by freshman Katelyn Morin (Marston Mills, MA) who finished with 16 kills and a career high .344 hitting percentage (16-5-32). Junior Christine Duffy (Massapequa, NY) has 12 kills in four games with five digs. Senior Charnette Porter (Framingham, MA) posted 12 kills and two solo blocks. Junior Tiffany Phoenix (Cresskill, NJ) has 21 digs in the loss.
Sophomore Katie Thomas (Wappingers Fall, NY), the NEC leader in digs, came up with a match-high 31 from her libero position.
The Pioneers will travel to St. Francis-NY and Long Island next weekend.
