Senior Jose Olivero scored a game-high 21 points, while Bryan White added 15 and seven rebounds to lead Lehigh University to a 72-63 win over visiting Sacred Heart University in a non-conference game Sunday afternoon.
Sacred Heart, 1-3, took a 5-0 early lead until the Mountain Hawks hit their first bucket nearly six minutes into the contest. The Pioneers turned Lehigh over 11 times in the first half, but converted those miscues into just two points.
The two teams were tied at the intermission 28-28, thanks to a Jarrid Frye three at the buzzer. Frye finished the game with 15 points. Junior Luke Granato scored 13 of his team-high 16 in the first half.
The Mountain Hawks, 2-3, used a 10-0 run at the start of the second half to take a 38-28 lead. A Jason Mgebroff layup with 15:05 left gave Lehigh its biggest lead of the game at 40-29.
The Pioneers trailed 55-44 with 8:02 after a three-point play by Olivero. SHU then went to the press and forced Lehigh into several turnovers and with 6:18 left the Pioneers had cut the gap to 57-55. A pair of free throws by senior Tavio Hobson with 4:51 remaining had the Pioneers within a single point, 58-57.
SHU went cold from the field, missing three of its next four shots and the Mountain Hawks parlayed that into a 64-59 advantage with a Kyle Neptune jumper with 2:46 left. The Pioneers misfired after another Lehigh turnover, its 25th, and Mgebroff converted at the other end to make it 66-59 and put the Pioneers away.
The Pioneers will open the home portion of their schedule on Tuesday at 7:05 against the University at Albany.
