Men's Basketball Falls at St. Francis, 62-58

BROOKLYN, NY - Allan Sheppard scored 16 points, including a pair of free throws in the final minute, to help the St. Francis College Terriers defeat visiting Sacred Heart University 62-58 in a Northeast Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers, 10-13 overall and 7-7 in the Northeast Conference, trailed 24-14 at the intermission, due to just 29 percent shooting (6-21) and 14 turnovers. Kibwe Trim, SHU's leading scorer had just six points in the half and took just three shots.

A 7-2 run to start the second half got SHU back within five at 26-21 with 17:28 to play. Trim had a three-point play in the middle of that run. Tristan Smith knocked home a three for the Terriers to push it back to eight, but Trim answered with another conventional three-point play of his own.

Yet another three-point play by Trim with 15:30 left put the Pioneers within 31-27. Nick Jones hit a pair of free throws with 12:00 left to give the Terriers a 37-31 lead. Ryon Howard cut it to 41-37 with just over ten minutes remaining in the game.

A three by Tristan Smith with 8:00 left extended the Terrier lead to 48-39. Jarrid Frye knifed through the lane between three white shirts with 6:38 left to put SHU back within 48-43. Jones hit another three for the Terriers to get the lead back to eight.

After Trim stole an inbounds pass by St. Francis, Frye finished it off with a layup to make it 51-47 with 5:35 to play. Trim missed two free throws with 4:25 left that could have cut the gap to two and Allan Sheppard made it hurt when he converted a layup at the other end to make it 53-47. Sheppard hit a rainbow jumper over Frye with 3:00 remaining to give the Terriers a 55-47 lead.

Trim was fouled grabbing a rebound with 2:40 remaining and missed the front end of a one-and-one. Howard grabbed the offensive board, but his follow-up was blocked and St. Francis went the other way. Trim kept the Pioneers alive by hitting a pair of free throws with 1:23 to go to make it 55-49. Sheppard was fouled on the inbound pass and made two to push the lead back to eight.

A Drew Shubik three for SHU with 1:08 left made it 57-52. The Pioneers again fouled on the inbound pass and Smith hit both to make it 59-52. Frye knocked home another three for the Pioneers to get within four. Shubik tied up Smith on the ensuing inbound and the possession arrow favored the Pioneers. Trim went to the basket after the tie-up and was fouled while completing a layup with :44 left. He made the free throw to cut the Terrier lead to one at 59-58.

Sheppard was fouled driving to the basket by Howard with :25 left and calmly sank both tries and give SFNY a 61-58 lead/ Frye lost the ball off his hands driving the other way, giving the ball back to the Terriers. Forced to foul again, Brown sank both tried with :16 left to give the Terriers a five-point bulge and ice the Pioneers.

Trim finished the game with 22 points and eight boards for the Pioneers, while Frye finished with 13.

The win improved St. Francis to 8-14 overall and 5-8 in the conference.
