
Men's Volleyball Falls to New Haven in Three

Fairfield, CT - The New Haven Chargers used runs of 16-3 and 18-3, respectively to close out the final two games and complete a three game sweep of Sacred Heart in men's volleyball action Wednesday night at the Pitt Center.
After New Haven won a back-and-forth first game, 30-26, the Chargers took command of the match midway through the second game. With the score tied at 14, New Haven proceeded to score 12 straight points to open up a 26-14 lead. From there they cruised to a 30-17 win and a 2-0 match lead.
The Pioneers led the third game 14-12 before the Chargers made their run to end the match. Freshman Austin Soucy had two service aces to key the 18-3 match clinching run for New Haven.
Sacred Heart was led offensively by freshman Barry Smith (Shelton, CT) who had six kills. Junior Brian Rosa (Port Jefferson Station, NY) also had six kills and senior Alex Catani (Larkspur, CA) tallied seven kills. However, the Pioneers ended up with just 25 kills as compared to 28 errors.
Sophomore Drew Kirkeby led the Charger attack with seven kills and a .545 hitting percentage. Senior Erwin Villaorduna had eight kills to increase his nation-leading total and per game average.
With the win, New Haven remains unbeaten on the season, improving to 8-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Sacred Heart is still looking for their first victory, falling to 0-6 on the season and 0-2 in the EIVA.
The Pioneers are back in action next Wednesday, February 22nd, when they visit the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
