PROVIDENCE, RI (February 25, 2006) - The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team dropped their 2006 season-opener Saturday afternoon, falling at Brown, 14-4. The Pioneers scored four times in the first half but were shutout in the second half en route to the loss. It was the season opener for both teams.
The Bears sprinted out to a five goal lead right out of the gates as five different Brown players found the back of the net. SHU finally got on the board in the 12th minutes when junior Heather Gureckis (Nashua, NH) scored unassisted. Gureckis scored her second two minutes later, also unassisted but two more Brown goals made the soccer 8-2 with 13 minutes left in the half.
SHU sophomore Elizabeth Ottey (Baltimore, MD) scored her first goal of the year on a free position shot followed by freshman Mary Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) who tallied her first career collegiate goal also on a free position shot.
Brown added five more second half scores to their 9-4 halftime advantage to cement away the win. SHU was out shot 37-22 on the day and had 25 turnovers. Senior goalkeeper Candice Celebre (Lake Grove, NY) made 20 saves in the loss.
Brown's Amie Biros scored four times and added a pair of assists in the win.
The Pioneers are back in action on Tuesday afternoon when they host Marist at 3 pm.
