Junior pitcher Jay Monti threw seven strong innings, while George Lamar pitched two scoreless innings of relief to help the Sacred Heart baseball team top Coppin State 6-3 in the opening game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers, 1-11, took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when senior Dave Kaloyanides led off the game with a triple and scored on a bunt double play by Rob Tencza with runners on first and third and no outs.
SHU scored four more times in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead thanks to an RBI groundout by Jason Maiella and a two-run triple by Bobby McKee.
The Eagles scored three times off Monti in the sixth to close within five three, but the Pioneers answered with one in the top of the eighth when McKee was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for the final margin of victory.
Monti allowed eight his in his seven innings of work. He allowed the three runs while striking out six and walking just one.
