STATEN ISLAND, NY (March 31, 2006) - The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team scored 12 times in the second half to blow open a 5-4 game at the half as the Pioneers picked up their second Northeast Conference win of the year, 17-8, at Wagner College Friday afternoon. Junior Brianna Bubeck (Bethlehem, NY) led the Pioneer charge, scoring four of her season-high five goals in the second half to keep SHU a perfect 2-0 in the NEC this year.
Wagner struck first on Friday and built themselves a 3-1 lead 10 minutes through the first quarter as Anne Thomas, Cara Gonzalez and Darby Biggart all recorded markers. The Pioneers answered with a three goal jaunt after almost eight minutes of scoreless action, started by senior Emily Tully's (South Windsor, CT) second goal at 11:55. Bubeck and sophomore Katie Salamone (Baltimore, MD) followed at 7:50 and 6:25 to pull SHU in front 4-3.
Wagner's Biggart scored at 3:52 left off a pass from Gonzalez but the Pioneers answered again on Salamone's second, unassisted, just over a minute later to send SHU into the break up, 5-4. The Seahawks held the edge in shots in the first, 17-14, but converted just one of five free position shots.
The second half was all Pioneers as the SHU opened with three goals in the first minute and three seconds of action. Bubeck buried her second just 17 seconds into the half followed by junior Heather Gureckis's (Nashua, NH) who added to her team-leading total with her first tally of the afternoon 50 seconds in.
Freshman Amanda Williams (Monroe, CT) followed just 13 seconds later with her first of the day and the Pioneers took a commanding 9-4 lead in a blink of an eye. Wagner's Heather George, the NEC's leading goal scorer, got on the scoreboard following Gureckis's second goal of the afternoon but another SHU run put the game out of reach.
The Pioneers rattled off five-straight in a five-minute span starting with Salamone's third at 22:32 and ending with a Bubeck marker at 17:23 to put the Pioneers up nine, 14-5. The Seahawks tried to claw back in with three-straight goals, but Sacred Heart scored the final three of the game and shut out Wagner over the final 12 minutes to seal the victory.
Senior Candice Celebre (Lake Grove, NY) was stellar in goal, making 14 saves, including eight in the first half, to earn the victory in the cage.
Adding to Bubeck's five goal effort was a three goal and assist day from Tully and Gureckis and a three goals day from Salamone. Freshman Mary Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) had two goals and two assists.
The Pioneers made the most of their 17 second half shots, scoring on 12. Wagner converted just 2 of 10 free position shots as they fall to 2-7 and 0-2 in the league.
The Pioneers, now 2-8 overall, return home next week to host a pair of NEC match-ups as Mount St. Mary's pays a visit on Friday, April 7th and Monmouth on Sunday, April 9th.
