Final Stats
FAIRFIELD, CT (April 7, 2006) - Sacred Heart goalie Candice Celebre (Lake Grove, NY) made 11 saves including the game clincher with 0.7 seconds remaining as she turned away Katie Falatach to send the Pioneers home with an 8-7 Northeast Conference victory over Mount St. Mary's Friday afternoon on Campus Field. The Pioneers got four goals from junior Brianna Bubeck (Bethlehem, NY) as they remain perfect in the NEC at 3-0.
Sacred Heart (3-8, 3-0 NEC) which finished the day four-of-seven on free position shots, scored the games first goal at 2:18 when freshman Mary Montesarchio (Cordlandt Manor, NY) buried her free position attempt. Sophomore Alyssa Harris (Kings, Park, NY) made it 2-0 just past the 10 minute mark when she also converted from the free position.
Mount's (4-8, 2-2 NEC) offense lit the scoreboard for the first time just under two minutes later when Falatch buried her sixth marker of the season, unassisted. Bubeck gave SHU back its two-goal lead just over 22 minutes into play, scoring her first of her four goals, unassisted. The Mount answered right back, winning the ensuing draw and tacking one on off the stick of Kirby Day, her 23rd on the year.
The Pioneers bounced the lead back to two, 4-2, four minutes before the break as junior Lindsay Dragin (Hopkinton, MA) made an outstanding individual effort. Dragin executed a perfect stick check on Mount's Jenna Duffy, scooped up the ground ball and raced untouched up field. Dragin looped a perfect pass over a pair of Mountaineer defenders where sophomore Liz Ottey (Baltimore, MD) collected the ball right in front of goal and buried it for the 4-2 advantage.
SHU came out of the break and built their biggest lead, 5-2, off the stick of Bubeck who scored her second of the day from the free position at 32:40. The Mount offense found their legs and began a four goal run, thanks to their dominance in the draw circle winning three-straight and 11 total for the game. Markers from Falatach, Day and Casey Paris pulled the Mountaineers even at 5-5 and Ellie Keener gave her team its first lead capping the 10 minute run at 42:23.
The lead was short lived as Bubeck tied it just over a minute later off a one-timer feed from Maureen Hohn (Baltimore, MD) in front and SHU took the lead back just 21 seconds later on junior Heather Gureckis's (Nahua, NH) 18th goal of the year. Bubeck made it 8-6, scoring her third free position goal of the afternoon at 47:27.
SHU dug in defensively and had a chance to run out the clock on offense but a turnover with 1:07 left gave the Mount life. The Mountaineers took advantage. After a scramble in front, Kathleen Rossetti emerged with the ball and bounced a shot in with 15 ticks left to pull her team to within one, 8-7. The Mount took the ensuing draw and set up for one last attempt.
Falatch was able to draw the Sacred Heart foul with just 0.7 seconds left and she set up just inside the circle to take on last ditch shot. Falatch let fire low and hard at the whistle and ball got to net but SHU's Celebre smothered it as the horn sounded to preserve the Pioneer victory.
The Pioneers are back in action on Sunday, April 9th when they host Monmouth at 1 pm on Campus Field.
